Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to question particular calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
